[Genesis Breyer P-Orridge and her reactivated Psychic TV aka PTV3 are terribly sad to announce the cancellation of their November North American tour dates. This decision is entirely due to the unexpected passing of band member Lady Jaye Breyer P-Orridge.

Lady Jaye died suddenly on Tuesday 9th October 2007 at home in Brooklyn, New York from a previously undiagnosed heart condition which is thought to have been connected with her long-term battle with stomach cancer. Lady Jaye collapsed and died in the arms of her heartbroken "other half" Genesis Breyer P-Orridge.

Being overwhelmed by the enormity of their loss, Genesis and the other surviving band members of Psychic TV/PTV3 are not able to properly meet the demands of touring and performance. Obviously, her absence onstage , the conspicuous loss of her unique charisma, music and humour would be an unbearable emotional reality to confront night after night.

The group, who have been touring to promote their first studio album in 12 years, will announce future plans after an appropriate period of mourning.]

Genesis loved his/her wife so much that (s)he actually underwent breast-enlargement surgery with her on Valentines Day of 2003. They did everything together. This is a really fucking sad loss.

The multimedia artist, poet and novelist Brion Gysin may be the most influential cultural figure of the twentieth century that most people have never heard of.

Gysin (1916-1986) was an English-born, Canadian-raised, naturalized American of Swiss descent, who lived most of his life in Morocco and France. He went everywhere when the going was good. He dabbled with surrealism in Paris in the 1930s, lived in the "interzone" of Tangier in the 1950s and traveled the Algerian Sahara with Sheltering Sky author Paul Bowles before moving into the legendary Beat Hotel in Paris.

Gysin's ideas influenced generations of artists, musicians and writers, among them David Bowie, Keith Haring, Patti Smith, Michael Stipe, Genesis P-Orridge, John Giorno and Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones. None was touched more profoundly than William S. Burroughs, who said admiringly of Gysin: "There was something dangerous about what he was doing."

It was Gysin who introduced the Rolling Stones to the exotica of Morocco and took Stones' guitarist Brian Jones to Jajouka where he recorded the tribal musicians performing the Pipes of Pan. It was Gysin who provided the hashish fudge recipe published in Alice B. Toklas' cookbook, promising "ecstatic reveries and extensions of one's personality on several simultaneous planes." It was Gysin who introduced Burroughs to an automatic writing method called the cut-up, a literary progenitor to sampling. And it was Gysin who developed-with Ian Sommerville, the Dream Machine-a device that allowed people, with the flick of a switch, to access altered states of consciousness without drugs.

Author of Books on Brion Gysin and the Dream Machine

John Geiger is the author of four books. His first two concerned Arctic exploration. His next two, Chapel of Extreme Experience: A Short History of Stroboscopic Light and The Dream Machine and Nothing Is True - Everything Is Permitted: The Life of Brion Gysin, concerned the Beat movement. In an age when many authors opt for specialization, publishing book after book on the same topic, the range of Mr. Geiger's publications might strike the casual observer as odd. Here's a guy who is a Governor and Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. What's he doing writing about the Beats?

Impressed by the Gysin biography and curious to know more about the juxtaposition of Mr. Geiger's interests, RealityStudio prepared the following interview questions and Mr. Geiger graciously agreed to respond.

RealityStudio: What first drew you to study Brion Gysin, William Burroughs, their peers and their era?

Geiger: I had written two books concerned with geographic exploration, and — at the time — didn't want to write a third. I was interested in Gysin and Burroughs both as another kind of explorer, of inner space... I was also intrigued by the idea that someone like Gysin, a bohemian, gay, had come from Edmonton, Alberta, which was a small conservative town in the 1920s. He was such a fascinating creature, Brion: how is it that such a barren landscape — then — could produce such a harvest? But the idea for the book came from a lovely guy, James Grauerholz.

RealityStudio: How did you come to be fascinated enough by the dream machine to write an entire book about it? Have you experimented with a dream machine yourself?

Geiger: My interest in flicker grew out of research into the life of Brion. I started to investigate the claim that there was actual science behind the Dream Machine, that it was something more than a revolving lampshade. It's true: it is possible to experience an altered state of consciousness with the flick of a switch, and what's more light at intervals of 8 to 13 flashes per second can potentiate certain drugs. There was also this amazing cast of characters, people like W. Grey Walter, John R. Smythies. So I decided there was a separate book in it. I am a Dream Machine user and experience the most common response, colour, pattern and movement.

RealityStudio: You interviewed Burroughs for your books on Gysin and the dream machine. What was it like to visit Burroughs? Was it your research that brought you to him, or had you met him previously?

Geiger: Burroughs is branded on my memory. He could have lived a very different life, and he knew it. His alter ego was a crooked sewer commissioner. Thank God for the Ugly Spirit that Gysin once glimpsed through a hashish fog, that Thing that inhabited Burroughs and ruined and saved his life. He really was that which he attributed to Gysin: "An alien eruption." He didn't fit the stereotype. No black jeans. No Turkish cigarettes. He recited Robert Service to me, not Ginsberg. He asked me about Canada's gun laws. I tried to explain the rationale behind the registry, his answer came straight out of the NRA handbook: "Registration is the first step towards seizure." He showed me a handgun he kept under his pillow, explaining he'd been "threatened by lesbians." He asked me all about the Arctic, where I have been fairly often: He wanted to know about the insects there.

RealityStudio: Did you ever meet Gysin?

Geiger: Never did. Burroughs thought that a good thing. He said no one came away from meeting Gysin feeling ambivalent. He said I would have either loathed him or loved him, and neither was appropriate in the circumstances. But of course I wish I had met him. Gysin died in 1986.

RealityStudio: How did you find the experience of writing a biography of someone who passed away relatively recently? Did friends or relations pressure you in any way or discourage you from writing frankly about Gysin?

Geiger: Gysin was a mythomaniac, so the hardest part was cutting through all the bullshit and that process was not always helped by his old friends. I had one of his acolytes tell me in hushed tones that Gysin had been CIA. Yeah right, the CIA's going to recruit a rapacious gossip as an operative. Good cover though: gay, druggie, avant-garde artist. Couldn't hide his moods, little more a state secret. Nobody'd ever guess that he was really passing the goods to Uncle Sam.

RealityStudio: Do you have any particularly memorable moments from your meetings with Burroughs? Any quotable quotes?

Geiger: Here's one: "The thought is the strike."

RealityStudio: Burroughs often professed his admiration for Gysin. Your biography gives a lot of insight into the productive years of friendship between Burroughs and Gysin, but it also suggests that in later years even Burroughs felt that Gysin's work was something of a failure (e.g. Burroughs never liked the NL screenplay; Burroughs only wrote an introduction for The Last Museum "despite his own very real misgivings"; etc.). Did you sense that Burroughs had grown disappointed in his mentor?

Geiger: Not at all. Burroughs retained an immense respect for Gysin right to the end. He thought, however, that Brion was a better painter than writer. He feared that Gysin wrote with his tongue in his cheek and he's right.

RealityStudio: Do you have any general thoughts about why Gysin's work has failed to achieve much renown, in spite of its great influence on Burroughs and others? Do you think it deserves to be more highly considered?

Geiger: I think Brion Gysin will be much better known in a hundred years than he is now. It's going to take a while to catch up.

RealityStudio: Finally, are you planning any further books or research on Burroughs, Gysin, or the Beat movement?

Geiger: I have a few ideas but nothing imminent. I am just in the process of finishing a book that combines two of my interests, geographic exploration and altered states.

If balance is the key to the universe, and going with the flow is by all means creative, then Icuras misused his spiritual gifts like opening the Pandora’s box by flying to high to his masculinity, and God instead of being one with the universe or unisex meaning one consciousness that of the triangle pointing downward which is the blue planet earth and united with one triangle pointing upward being sun, gold and the spiraling serpent like DNA universe as we are an ecology within as well as without and we are more commonly living in a De Facto world which is not free to access equal trade in the name of thanksgiving itself. Of course blue and gold make green. The Greek word harmos means harmony or unity as well as yoga like kundalini yoga and the medical staff also represent unity of two polarities and no it is not of good and evil uniting it is feminine and masculine and if you separate the two it is death, disease, and evil and end of pro creation other wise its like trying to take an atom which has empty space in it and trying to split it. This does not entitle homosexuals as bad people after all there is homeopathy of like cures like as well.

The human mouth is the least part to get infected because there are so many anti-bodies in it and if the person feels compassionate, there hearts will stimulate imunoglobin A in their saliva.

PRELUDE: A LOVE STORY OF GENDER REUNION

This is a stream of unconsciousness essay on the Self, illustrated by the kaleidoscopic sexual personae of GENESIS P-ORRIDGE. Always the mercurial Magician, Gen has been associated with the art and decadence of the Thelemic, industrial, punk, Goth, and rave movements, and was arguably the earliest proponent of acid house. His bands have ranged from hard-edged Throbbing Gristle to ethereal Psychic TV to avant-garde Thee Majesty.

Never one to commune in solitude, all these eras of the artist, priest and shaman have fused into the orgiastic seizure of family-band PTV3. Now he gladly shares center stage with the group, including wife Lady Jaye, daughter Genesse, and bandmates, forming a cohesive unit to rock the house. This is a personal and critical triumph for the artist, whose daemonic career stalled somewhat after his tragic injuries in an infamous Hollywood fire at the former home of mega-magician, Harry Houdini.

This crucible of chemical breakdown created a Phoenix-like opportunity for a remixing of elements, a new chapter of the sexual metathesis. Mind and body, perturbed by the chaos of a turbulent inner life, relinked in a transformation of prima materia through a luminous rebirth. In alchemy, both the primal matrix and finished product (Philosopher’s Stone) are hermaphroditic, an androgyne, and rebis (double thing).

This is exemplified on the Tree of Life by the merging of Hod (Hermes) and Netzach (Aphrodite) to open the 25th path ART (Temperance) which culminates in the Self-Real-I-zation of Tiphareth, the heart center. It represents a change of plane, a quantum leap from Astral to Causal Body as intentionally-created vehicle of consciousness with its enlarged perspective.

In a triumphant international come-back over 2004-2005, the Dionysian diva proved he never really went “away”. Nor did the perennial global fans. Now, aka Breyer P-Orridge, Genesis masquerades in conjunction with soror mystica and co-artist, Lady Jaye.

Hir symbolic externalization of the Androgyne is a deliberate, conscious artistic creation...body as art, bringing body fully into the artistic process, in a hyper-committed way. This informed transformation is lightyears beyond body-building or the prosaic body-modification of neo-tribal culture, which is now reduced to the 21st Century equivalent of mall-hair by pierced teeny-boppers and tatted grandmothers with tickets for Burning Man.

The new Virgin, in the ancient meaning of being One whole-in-oneself, took h/ir show on the road. From the beginning of his career, Genesis has been a seminal engineering influence in Occulture, while likewise being influenced by his intimate relationships with such icons as Timothy Leary, William Burroughs, and Brion Gysin. He was strongly influenced by Burroughs's "cut-up method" of writing. It is essentially a mantic rant, a collage technique with words and phrases uniquely juxtaposed. Now he's done the same with his body.

The search for an escape from a dualistic state has formed one of the great pursuits of philosophers, mystics and occultists alike. Morphing the meat body creates a cascade of transformation through the etheric bodies in the emotional, mental, and spiritual worlds - a coincidentia oppositorum. S/He is a KOAN of living flesh that confounds spectators and brings a screeching halt to linear thought in pure spectacle. It brings new meaning to McLuhan's old saw: the medium is the massage.

Do Homo Mutans or Homo Lumen embody an evolutionary thrust beyond Homo Sapiens? The immortal sacred Androgyne is a reiterated symbol throughout the history of art from neolithic times, and was particularly revered by medieval alchemists. Gen spoke at length about its resurrection in the fantasy life of our postmodern society in a Disinformation.com video. S/He implied the collective masturbatory fantasies of one-sided male culture have brought the Androgyne into embodiment, fueling its literal appearance to fulfill their sex-magick fueled fantasies.

In the latest narrative of their personal journey, charismatic Gen and Lady Jaye aren’t trying to fuse into twins, or even emphasize their mystical brother-sister aspects, but apparently seeking “escape velocity” from the shakles of the chemical identity. But this thrust is life-affirming, not evolutionary nostalgia of being longing for non-being. Perhaps the quest for the next-new-way-on has been fulfilled.

Genesis continues to eschew the local universe of each adoptive or adaptive persona in a self-induced alienation that affirms h/ir non-mentalized multiverse, her/e and now. He continues to stay on point in the hinterlands of personality by transcending each embodied version of Self. Jaye’s role in this hormonal alchemy should not be underestimated. Genesis credits her tender nursing as a key element in his psychophysical recovery. Mythopoetically, it is interesting to recall how Dionysus, too, was attended by the ever-present nurse. But, interdependence is not co-dependence.

This current, the “chymical wedding” of male and female, manifested strongly in the fin de siecle occulture, with the Symbolist artists of the Salon de las RoseCroix, and in the 20th century with the notorious occultist Aleister Crowley and the futuristic philosopher William S. Burroughs. Still, nothing Genesis has done in his artistic arc has been particularly derivative, or mere dramatic impersonation. The truth inhabiting these characters is what lends them power.

The psychic metamorphosis of interrelated themes of the artist/androgyne, the Narcissus myth, mirroring, and self-reflection figure prominently as metaphors in the artistic process. What is left for h/ir but to sprout wings to mate with the self-devouring serpent (Ouroboros) like Jung’s God-image of the Self, Aion, which necessarily reveals itself progressively?

The cultural Revolution IS being televised on PTV3. The Self is born in the image of the eye, the Third “I”, where we give Skull to the Divine.

The visionary artwork of Paul Laffoley has been featured in more than 40 exhibitions and several books, including In Pursuit of the Invisible and Paul Laffoley: The Phenomenology of Revelation. He apprenticed with sculptor Mirko Basaldella and visionary architect Frederick Kiesler, before founding the one-man think tank known as the Boston Visionary Cell.

Joe Coleman’s paintings are the unflinching autopsies of the human condition, the juncture between saint and sinner, sacred and profane, holy and horrifying. His work has been exhibited at the Wadsworth Atheneum and the Hieronymus Bosch Museum. He is widely considered to be one of today’s finest painters.

Genesis P-Orridge This so-called wrecker of civilization was a founding member of the Industrial Music post-punk coterie with the art rock ensemble Throbbing Gristle He later formed Psychic TV, a rock group with an attendant cult, and early mover in the nascent rave culture of the late 1980s. He is currently engaged in the Breyer/P-Orridge alchemical art project of “breaking sex” and going beyond gender.

genesis p-orridge challenged my ideas about music and rave culture in the movie "better living through circuitry". had i not seen that movie i would be a much less creative and more bored person than i am today. i was specifically inspired to go to my first underground event by his/her words in the film.
